What are Meal Replacement Shakes Anyway ?
These ‘shakes’ are usually an hybrid of protein, carbs and a little bit of ‘quality fat’, intended to replace a meal for the consumer who doesn’t have enough time to make another meal or simply no more ability to consume any more solid foods. The term got spread even more and today many people also refer to low calorie shakes as meal replacement shakes as well, and thus the confusion. The question I want to answer, as you have probably realized from the title – do you really need those shakes to lose weight ?
Are Meal Replacement Shakes for Weight Loss Needed ?
Short question is no. Let’s understand why. When you are after losing weight, you will most probably be on a diet low in calories, compared to the amount you could actually consume, solidly, and thus it will be a great waste of both money and ‘appetite’, to consume a shake instead of a solid meal, when in first place you are not going to consume a lot of calories a day.
I mean, if all you’re going to eat in that day are somewhere between 1500-2500 calories (calories are definitely not just ‘calories’, but it’s a safe term to use here), which is not a lot of food for most people and far from being the solid food cap, why would you want to replace one of your meals with a shake?
I hope it makes sense. The only reason I can see for these shakes would be if you have been on the road for a lot of time and can’t really, under any circumstance, get the nutrients you need. This is rare and far from happening for most people. If I miss a meal personally, I simply shove it with the next meal. Works like a charm.
